Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the average groom take?

Every groom is different, depending on the size of the dog and the condition of the coat, on average a full groom can take up to 2 hours. This time will be shortened if the dog is small and the coat is in good condition. And on the other hand this time can be lengthened when you have a large dog with a poor condition coat.

Are you properly trained?

Yes, the groomer for Posh Pets is fully qualified. Holding a London City & Guilds 775 dog grooming certificate. And a certificate from the London Academy of Grooming. Also most recently gaining a higher diploma in Veterinary nursing. Susan is a full member of the Irish Professional Dog Groomers Association. Being a member of this association keeps Susan up to date with the very latest grooming styles and professional equipment available.

Can I stay with my dog?

It’s actually better if you leave the salon as the dogs are like children and will play up more trying to get to their owner. If your dog is new to the grooming process or is old or nervous we will not hesitate to call you if we think your dog needs to return home.

How often should my dog have its nails cut?

This is something that should be done at least every 3months of course only if it’s necessary to do so. Some dog require their nails to be trimmed more often than others. Dogs that are walked regularly on roads tend to wear the nails down naturally. If you are unsure you can just pop into the salon at any point and Susan will gladly check your dog’s nails for you.

How often should my dog be bathed?

Again this depends on your dog and how much he/she likes to swim in the river or roll in something unpleasant, here at Posh Pets we have very mild shampoos for dogs that need regular baths. A mild shampoo won’t cause any irritation and it won’t dry the skin & hair out. All our shampoos a made from natural ingredients and we keep a wide selection of shampoos and conditioners for different coat types and conditions, including flea shampoo.

What’s the difference between clipping and stripping?

Clipping is done by using electric clippers and stripping is done by “plucking” the hair out with finger and thumb technique. Stripping can only be done on dogs with a wire texture coat. Unfortunately sometimes even if your dog is a breed known for having a wire coat he/she will still need clipping because if the hair is too soft it is just like pulling out fluff and this will hurt your pet. Stripping is also a much longer process and takes around 3 hours to complete, but the finish look is very natural and leaves your dog with the desired wire texture to the coat.

How often does my dog need grooming?

This again depends on what breed of dog you own. But Posh Pets would recommend no matter what breed you have all dogs need to be groomed regularly. Brushing your dog’s hair will stimulate the natural oils in the coat and help keep shedding hair to a minimum. Owners that groom their dogs regularly at home tend to notice changes in their dogs health more easily, such as lumps, bumps, warts, cists and any unwanted creepy crawlies they may have picked up on their travels. Posh Pets would recommend bringing your dog to the salon every 6 – 8 weeks for a full groom which would include a bath. For breeds that may not require such frequent visits to the groomers would still need to come in at least 3 – 4 times a year. Dogs with short smooth coats which you may think do not need to be professionally groomed still benefit a trip to the salon to get their ears checked and cleaned and their nails trimmed. And a thorough bath and groom through, which would include a basic health check as part of the grooming process at Posh Pets.
